April Cumming
Executive Assistant
April joined the AHI in July 2025 as Executive Assistant following eight years with a large multi-sector Australian Trade Union, where she had oversight of national training and events administration. In her time at the union, she also worked in Digital Communications, legal filing and as an EA to the Victorian Branch Secretary. Originally from Scotland, April’s background is in policy and campaigns. She has worked in both the Scottish and UK Parliament supporting Labour members in key areas of legislation, with a particular focus on the devolution of taxation and further powers following the 2014 Independence Referendum. She has worked in a voluntary capacity on the boards of several Scottish policy think tanks and was Assistant General Secretary of the Scottish Fabians.
Her key area of policy concern is Land Reform and Community Ownership, primarily focussing on how more equitable systems can improve local democracy and encourage connection to place and culture. She looks forward to opportunities to explore this more in Australasia through her work with the AHI. April has an Honours Degree in Media from Queen Margaret University Edinburgh and begins her part-time Masters in Public Policy at RMIT in 2026.
